Today was a great day at Access...We had several people baptized just prior to our first service. We'll be telling their stories next week so make sure you come and hear how God has been working in and through the people of Access.

I also just want to say that we are blessed with an amazing tech team at Access. Today during our first service we experienced an equipment failure that produced some unwanted noise and ultimately forced us to cut worship a little bit short. It's unfortunate that anytime someting like this happens the tech guys generally get the brunt of the complaints and or nasty looks. It's always good to remember that they are workign with cables, computers, and electronics and sometimes those things just break. Our tech team is awesome. The end.

Finally, come to the night of worship at my house this Wednesday. You won't regret it.

You're all invited to my house for a night of worship. Here's the deal. Since Kristin and I moved to Lakeland we have wanted to have as many Access people over to our house as possible. Some of you have come and shared a meal or watched some T.V. And that's great. But if I could have all of you over at one time the one thing that I would really want to do is worship. So that's what we're going to do. We're going to hang out for a bit, pray for a bit, and then a couple friends and I are going to lead a time of worship. In my living room.

It won't be fancy, but it will be a great time for us to spend some time together in God's presence. There are several reasons that I believe it's going to be a very important night for us as a church. If you want to hear about more about that...Then you should come.

Sunday, at Access, we celebrated Christmas. Pastor Jason delivered a great talk reminding us that the birth of Christ shows us that God is with us. We also took communion and sang carols together. As I walked to my truck after service with my six year old son, Connor, he saw that I was carrying the extra communion cups and asked me what they were . I took a moment to explain to him what communion is and why it is so important to us as Christ followers. Then, in my truck in the YMCA parking lot, my son and I took communion together. It was an incredibly powerful and spiritual moment for me as a father. It reminded me that too often we rely on others to teach our children about God. Sometimes it's easier to just let them learn about God in church and then ask them about it after. I want to encourage all of our parents to use this Christmas season as an opportunity to be actively involved in teaching our children about Christ.

THE GOSPEL - Week 2

Let me just say - Pastor Jay did a great job talking about encountering God this morning. I've only been around for a couple of months but this morning definitely ranks up there in terms of weekend services. I'm really excited about what God has in store for Access in 2010. Songs from today were:

I Adore You - Phil Wickham
Endlessly - Desperation
This Is Our God - Hillsong
You Won't Relent - Jesus Culture

At the end of the year, I find myself, like many, very reflective. I'm thankful for what God has done through our church. Here are a few random thoughts.

I'm so humbled to pastor Access Church. Our people are the most amazing people ever. To watch them give and serve so tirelessly is so refreshing. This is the church I've always dreamed of - and the best is yet to come!

We had a great weekend at Access. Pastor Jay did an amazing job today of communicating that the message of the Gospel is an encounter with God. So often, we can get so busy, or pulled so many directions, that we lose sight of that truth!

Our band is so stinking good. And loud. We LOVE it.

This week, we've got the Access Volunteer Christmas party. It's going to be a great way for us to honor those who serve so faithfully each week. If you volunteer, please make plans to join us. If you're not currently volunteering, please sign up today! Click here to volunteer

If you missed the annual Christmas Outreach with Parker Street Ministries, you really missed out on a great time. Again, our people ROCK! We had such an overwhelming response to the event. Here are some great pictures from a great day! Click here

Next Sunday at Access is going to be AWESOME! We're having a special combined Christmas service at 10:30. Don't miss it!

What a great day at Access Church!

We saw quite a few people give their lives to Christ today - that NEVER gets old! You were created to be free. Jesus' death on the cross represented the forgiveness we've already been given.

Everyone who came left their sin, their past, and their failures at the cross. Some of them are so heart wrenching. God's forgiveness is so overwhelming.

Everything was rockin' at church today, too. Jordan Rippy and the band never disappoint.

I'm really excited about partnering with Parker Street Ministries for the Christmas Store. So many people have donated items for the PSM families. It's going to be a great day. More info here.

Special thanks to the volunteers who make Access happen. We've got a special Christmas party coming up just for you. To volunteer, click here.

We're planning big things for next year. It's going to be a special 2010!

If you hang around Access long enough you’re bound to hear someone say it. It’s part of us. Our Mantra. But what does it mean? It means that we want to bring heaven to earth. How do we do that? We ask ourselves questions about things like poverty, disease, and injustice. We recognize that those things are absent from our Biblical understanding of heaven and so we fight with conviction to remove them from the earth.

But just as there are things that we must fight against because of their absence in heaven there are also things that we must passionately fight for because of their presence in heaven. This thought has shaped my approach to worship. Revelation chapter 4 tells us two things about worship in heaven:

Worship in heaven never stops. (v. 8)

Worship in heaven is contagious. (v. 9-11)

These two realities of heaven force us to ask questions about our worship here on earth. Do we only view worship on something that happens on Sunday morning? Do our lives give glory and honor to God in a way that inspires others to worship?

I hope that when it comes to worship our heart’s prayer will simply be, “On earth as it is in Heaven.”

“I can safely say, on authority of all that is revealed in the Word of God, that any man or woman on this earth who is bored and turned off by worship is not ready for heaven.”
– A.W. Tozer

Take Me Higher – Lincoln Brewster
Your Love Is Everything – Jesus Culture Version
How He Loves – Jared Anderson Version
You Won’t Relent – Jesus Culture Version

This was the first week of our Paper or Plastic series. Pastor Jason did a great job exploring God’s plans for our finances. This series is extremely timely heading into the holiday season where extra expenses and spending are at an all-time high. Pastor Jason also announced that he and Lis are expecting Burns baby number two!

Thoughts from Sunday Morning...

While listening to Pastor Jason's talk I was intrigued by a story from the Old Testament in the book of Joshua about a man named Achan. Achan was an Israelite that had lived his entire life in the desert. God had brought His people out of slavery in Egypt, but because of the people's lack of trust in Him, He refused to lead them into the promised land until an entire generation passed in the desert.

After 40 years the time finally came for the Israelites to claim what God had promised them. They marched across the Jordan river and God destroyed the city of Jericho for them. One of the rules God had set for them was that they couldn't keep any of the plunder from the captured city. Now that they were in the land God promised he wanted them to keep their trust in him, not the riches they would now posses. Achan, disobeyed God and hid silver, gold and a few other things under his tent.

As we read this story it's easy to point a finger a Achan. After all, he had lived his entire life in the desert experiencing God's provision. By day he followed a pillar of cloud and by night a pillar of fire for direction. In the morning when he walked out of his tent there was Manna (a bread like food) to eat. When the people needed water God would cause it to spring out of the rocks. For 40 years their clothes and sandals didn't even wear out. Everything they ever needed was provided supernaturally by God. How could Achan not trust God now?

Like I said, its easy to point the finger at Achan, but then I'm reminded of my own lack of trust. Time after time God has come through for me when I've needed Him, yet I still have a hard time giving Him complete control in my life. In what ways do you still struggle with trusting him? It's important in those times to remember all the ways He has provided. Place your trust in Him and He will always come through when you need Him.

Pentecost

You may or may not know that this Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. This is a very important day in the history of the church. Just before Jesus was taken to Heaven he said to His disciples “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.” On the day of Pentecost the gift of the Holy Spirit was delivered to the 120 believers that remained in Jerusalem. The arrival of the Holy Spirit caused such a commotion, thousands of people gathered around to see what was happening. Peter, making the most of the opportunity stood up and preached the first Gospel message. Upon hearing Peter’s words the people were “cut to the heart”and about 3,000 were saved.

This was the beginning of the church as we know it. They had no programs, committees or advertising. They simply had the Guidance of the Holy Spirit, the message of Christ and each other. Today, we have the advantages of technology, media, great programs and beautiful buildings. We live in a world that is smaller and more connected than ever before. Still, all these advantages mean nothing to the church if it does not have the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the message of Christ and a genuine love for one another. Without these three things we are no different than any other organization on the planet. As we approach this Pentecost Sunday let’s take a step back and ask God to help us get back to the core of who the church is as we play our part in establishing the Kingdom of God here on earth. Bring up there down here.

1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tonguesF6 as the Spirit enabled them.
5Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.7Utterly amazed, they asked: “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11(both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
13Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.F7 ”

Peter Addresses the Crowd

14Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15These men are not drunk, as you suppose.
…29“Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ,F11 that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay. 32God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. 33Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.
